PulpO: Eight Person Exhibition – August 6th

  • Art

Tulum Gallery is proud to present PulpO, an eight-person group show of new drawings and paintings by New York-based artists in animation, illustration, and the fine arts. Showing together in a variety of styles and media, these eight artists draw from their backgrounds as representational artists to cultivate narratives influenced by pulp and comic-art traditions. Themes like science fiction, war, horror, the occult, exploitative stories, sensational iconography, and adventure are interpreted by this group with surreal, whimsical, and abstract flourishes.

The manic and comically apocalyptic drawings of Christy Karacas, co-creator of Adult Swim’s Superjail!, will be featured for the first time on a smaller scale in PulpO. Devin Clark, the creator of Comedy Central’s Ugly Americans, will showcase his obsessive and tangled “hair” paintings. PulpO will also feature the painted pop culture musings of Jackson Publick, creator of Adult Swim’s Venture Bros., the sinister characters of illustration painter Kelly Denato’s storybook-acrylics, the playful “multiplane” objects of animation designer Chris George, and more.

Jackson Publick is the creator, director, and co-writer of Venture Bros., an Adult Swim animated series. His work highlights the oddities and inadvertent humor of pop culture, while it indulges those who posses a deep nostalgia for it. For the group-show Too Art for TV, Too he debuted prints from his An Ideal Web series, a farcical mishmash of Indian and American pop culture.
