Revealed at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con are prototypes of the Venture Bros. 3-3/4″ action figures by Bif Bang Pow. The figures are about the same size as Star Wars action figures and come with a character accessories. The prototypes include Brock Samson, Dr. Mrs. the Monarch and the Venture Brothers, Hank and Dean Venture.

We later learned in our interview with Bif Bang Pow, that the action figures were not green lit and production hinged greatly on audience interest and pre-orders. Pre-orders for the figures opened last August, followed by rallying support from the network and online communities.

After months of uncertainty, Bif Bang Pow and Entertainment Earth finally confirmed toy production yesterday. Leading BBP’s Venture Bros. toy line is Brock Samson with trademark knife and mullet. Bif Bang Pow anticipates the Brock Samson figure will ship after San Diego Comic-Con, late July or early August 2012.

So far, only Brock Samson is confirmed for toy production and your pre-order for these Venture characters has never been more important! Bif Bang Pow needs to hit a certain number of pre-orders before production can begin on the rest of the figures.

Pre-order the figures at Entertainment Earth or ask your favorite comic and toy shops to order the figures for their store. Your credit card will not be charged until the figures arrive later this year and then you’ll have been part of Venture Brothers history!

Action Figure F.A.Q.

I ordered a wave/assortment/set of figures with many different characters in it.
Will I still receive those?
No. Notifications are being sent out now to announce that all waves, assortments and sets have been cancelled. If you ordered one of these items before with a mix of characters, please verify the cancellation has taken place and pre-order the individual Brock Samson figure instead.

Why did this happen?
We tried many different strategies in getting these action figures to market. Factory minimum orders and low pre-orders prevented these from coming to market sooner. Thankfully, we’ve overcome these hurdles for Brock Samson only.

What about the other characters? When will they be released?
We understand that everyone wants to know the fate of the remaining characters and if they will be cancelled or will be going into production. First, the line will not be cancelled unless our license expires in a few years. The fate of the remaining characters depends on strong pre-orders. We will make announcements when each new character is about to go into production, whenever that may be. So in theory you may see more delays on certain characters, but eventually we hope to release them.

Making their debut at the convention are early action figure prototypes of Jefferson Twilight and Pete White. The new prototypes did not have head sculpts, but it’s an exciting glimpse for fans of the toy line and the series.

Released at San Diego Comic-Con is the new wave of Venture Bros. action figures by Bif Bang Pow. Figures include Dr. Orpheus, Phantom Limb, Dr. Girlfriend and Hank Venture. Also released is the Rusty Venture action figure set and lunch box. All figures are fully articulated and come with fabric clothing and some accessories. Action figures are limited edition and are individually carded in blister packaging.

Like the previous year, we couldn’t resist opening these figures! Here is what we have learned about Bif Bang Pow’s 8 inch action figures and our thoughts on the retro style series.

The Rusty Venture action figure set is this year convention exclusive. The set (Series 6) includes young Rusty Venture and Dr. Jonas Venture Sr. packaged in a limited edition lunch box. The lunch box is standard size and features full color artwork by Stephen DeStefano and Liz Artinian. The figures themselves are highly detailed and come with a few character accessories; Rusty sports a removable backpack and Doc Venture has goggles and the mythical ORB.

Dr. Orpheus (Series 5) is faithfully sculpted and fashioned with layers of clothing, including his magical talisman. Orpheus’ cloak is black with gold piping and purple lining; Cloak also features the Triad insignia on the back. His pinstripe tights are fastened with an elastic band over the heels. Orpheus’ left hand is posed and ready for magic, a unique feature on this figure.

Here’s a tip, fold the collar of Orpheus’ cloak for that authentic show look. See example.

Phantom limb (Series 5) is fitted in purple spandex and his arms, legs and torso are made from a translucent plastic. Bif Bang Pow says the inspiration behind this figure was the ‘Henshin Cyborg’ toy line of the late ’70s, a concept that works well for this figure. The clear limbs gives the illusion that he’s partially invisible and allows for the figure can stand on it’s own.

Dr. Girlfriend (Series 4) is the first female figure being released in the toy line. She is fashioned in her classic pink dress and pillbox hat. Her removable boots are molded similar to Mego’s WGSH toy line. Opening the figure’s dress reveals extra padding along the abdomen and buttocks for better shape. And just in case you were wondering, Dr. Girlfriend has pink underwear that is painted on the figure.

Hank Venture (Series 4) is the other half of the Venture Brothers! An essential part of Team Venture, Hank is dressed in classic attire and comes with a satellite navigational wrist watch. Comparing Hank and Dean side by side, we noticed that Hank has a better flesh tone and his head is a bit firmer than Dean. Both have the same body type and look great together. We are delighted they are finally reunited in the toy range!

To truly appreciate these figures, you have to free them from the blister packaging. Each figure is full of detail and faithful to the show. Bif Bang Pow did a remarkable job tailoring each figure, especially with Dr. Orpheus and Jonas Venture Sr., who both had multiple layers of fabric clothing. The head sculpts are accurate and the paint job is clean. Among the figures released, Dr. Orpheus and Phantom Limb are our favorite. We love the attention to detail with Dr. Orpheus and Phantom Limb’s transparent parts are both fun and innovative. Bif Bang Pow’s new wave of action figures are an impressive lot and a must for any Venture Brothers collection!

Now available online is the Venture Bros. 8 inch retro style action figures by Bif Bang Pow. These figures come with fabric clothing and full articulation reminiscent of Mego figures of the ’70s. VBB: We love the lunchbox packaging. It’s a great tie in to the show.

JL: Yeah. I hope fans believe in us and get how genuine we are about the series. These are flashback characters with little screen time and to make them a convention exclusive… I hope fans get how were winking at them.

VBB: With references on the show, some fans were disappointed there was no Rusty Venture thermos.

JL: [Laughs] Then I would put this to the fans, would you rather have one figure and a thermos or two figures and a lunchbox? Yeah. Have them answer that and maybe next year we’ll have less toys and maybe a thermos.

VBB: What can you tell us about the art on the lunch box?

JL: Stephen DeStefano and Liz Artinian did the art on the lunch box. When we started discussing the idea, there wasn’t a whole lot of art we could use for the lunch box and the guys made it happen. This is all new original art contracted for this product. We didn’t pulled off a design disc or something. It was made for the lunch box.

VBB: That’s fantastic.

JL: I’m just floored that here we are talking about a lunchbox that existed in a show within another show and that’s where it gets kinda meta if you will.

VBB: It makes the Rusty Venture show real to fans. It’s something they can use everyday.

JL: Yeah, I guess it’s like a Simpsons or Looney Tunes thing with their fictional products.

VBB: Let’s talk about the Venture Bros. 3-3/4″ action figures reveal here at Comic-Con.

JL: Surprised you, didn’t it?

VBB: Great reveal. Fans weren’t expecting it.

JL: We always say with Bif Bang Pow, expect the unexpected.

VBB: The figures are a welcomed surprise that many fans at the convention have been talking about. Prototypes on display include Dr. Mrs. the Monarch, Brock Samson and the Venture Brothers with hover bikes. Can you tell us a little how this line came about?

JL: As you know, the first conversations we had with Doc and Jackson were about producing an 8 inch retro line and once we had nailed that down, I sorta had a revelation which grew from some feedback floating around the internet. I got on the phone with him (Jackson) one day and I said in a little while we do make a 3-3/4 scale, but just to be retro again and piss everyone off [Laughs], we’ll make ‘em with 5 points of articulation. It’ll have shoulders, hips and neck (movement) and it’ll be just like the old Star Wars figures and he laughed. So it kinda came out of that, sorta a joke. And we explored it more and we were gonna mention it at Toy Fair but we didn’t want to take any energy away from the 8 inch scale figures we revealed.

Now, as excited as everybody is and I don’t mean to pee in anybody’s internet cornflakes, these are not green lit. We are not definitely going to make these yet. It all depends on audience interest and cost. With this scale, we are dealing with a different material and we would be doing everything from scratch. Each part of the figure has to have it’s own laser cut mold and it can get very costly. So it’s a question of whether there’s enough support from the fans to make the minimum needed.

VBB: I believe there is a strong interest for these new figures. This scale also seems vehicle friendly.

JL: Yeah, that was our intention. If we were to go full force on this like a G.I. Joe type line, then we could do vehicles and play sets and things like that. And again it will all depend on interest. Hopefully, there will be enough support to make these figures. I think with the show getting renewed and the buzz surrounding the figures on the internet, we will be able to make these figures.

VBB: What can fans expect from the Venture Bros. toyline in the near future?

JL: Argh! I really want to tell you this idea I have, which is so cool. I’m afraid I’ll shoot myself in the foot. So, I’m not going talk about that. But instead I will tell you about things we are doing currently.

In addition to the 8 inch prototypes you see here, I’m hoping to get another wave out. Knock on wood, we are going to see the 3-3/4 figures hit and if that happens, you’re gonna see more figure release dates, rather than build up to Comic-Con or the Spring. Were gonna keep it peppered throughout the year. That way, there isn’t too many lulls and fans don’t have to wait too long for new figures. And the lunch box is something that gets the network really excited about what were doing. We are trying to go beyond bobbles and action figures. If you look at our Doctor Who and Twilight Zone line, we have lunch boxes, water bottles, magnets and other merchandise. We hope to do more fun stuff like that for the line.
